After twelve years in Berlin, I returned permanently to the United States in 2013, establishing a studio practice in the Bronx. My extensive time abroad has left a lasting mark on my work. I am an American artist, yet I will never again be fully American in the way I was before I left. I will always see American culture a little from the outside.
My paintings subsequently have been autobiographical statements, tapping into my experiences in life and in art. The rendered figurative elements are designed to attract the eye, yet the messages that these images also convey are literally inscribed on their surfaces, forcing the viewer to vacillate between seeing the image and reading the message which together constitute the unique content of the work. All of my paintings are symbolic of something else. Every individual experience is, like these paintings, a carrier of meaning beyond itself.
